This study was conducted by DRI and STI over a period of 30 months beginning in December 1999. In the initial phase of the study, DRI examined the spatial, temporal, and statistical distributions of ozone, carbon monoxide, total non-methane hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides for routine monitoring sites in the SoCAB with continuous data from 1981 to 1998. The purpose of this study is to derive a conceptual explanation of the weekend ozone effect that is consistent with the fundamentals of ozone photochemistry, historic trends in the magnitude and spatial extent of the weekend effect, the diurnal and day-of-the-week variations in ambient VOC and NO-x concentrations and VOC/NO-x ratiosi, and the diurnal and day-of-the-week variations and source contributions of VOC and NO-x. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the weekly behavior of ozone in the SoCAB. These hypotheses are similar to those proposed by the California Air Resources Board (ARB, 2001).

A ten channel filter-fluorescer spectrometer was designed for measuring x-ray spectra from 2 to 115 keV at the Argus and Shiva laser facilities. Previously x-ray spectra were measured with filtered detectors; however, the higher fluxes and more complicated spectra observed in recent experiments requires the greater photon energy definition of this technique. Five filter-detector channels are also incorporated in the spectrometer for measuring low intensity sources. Five Pb-filtered detectors will be used for obtaining spectral information for energies greater than 100 keV. Provisions are being made to automate this diagnostic to produce the x ray spectrum minutes after shot time. (ERA citation 04:014389)

Laser fusion experiments require hard vacuum in the laser-beam spatial filters, target chambers and for target diagnostics instruments. Laser focusing lenses and windows, and target alignment windows must hold vacuum without optical distortion, and must be protected from target debris. The vacuum must be sufficient to prevent residual gas breakdown in focused laser light, avoid arcing at high voltage terminals, minimize contamination and melting of cryogenic targets, and prevent adsorption of the target's microfusion radiation before it reaches the diagnostics instruments.
